The origin of the modern lapel flower stems from the traditional look of a wedding boutonniere. The wording coming from the French was often referred to by the British as "them button hole flowers". Traditionally, the flower was placed in the button hole of the man’s suit or tuxedo however, these days, most boutonnieres and lapel flowers are pinned directly unto the man’s lapel.Curiously enough, the boutonniere and the bridal bouquet were created for similar reasons: to ward off bad smells, disease, and evil spirits (A little knowledge for you today---lol)The reason most of your vintage and thrifted jackets have small inserts in the lapel is because many gentlemen pinned a flower on their jacket almost daily which sparked interest in garment makers to design small hidden vases built right in the lapel to refrain from damaging their work on the detail of the jacket.

For you old cinema and vintage fashion lovers you may recall the likes of Fred Astair or Cary Grant wearing a boutonniere just to go out on a Friday evening.

Today, however, bouts are primarily worn only for proms, homecomings, and weddings where the reoccurring "flower lapel" can be worn any day of the week.

One could argue that the lapel is the most crucial part of a jacket's personality. Whether notched, peak or shawl, that folded flap of cloth is the eye of your blazer drawing immediate attention.

As powerful as these folded edges are alone, we always look to see the way Europeans take accessorizing the lapel to the next level. Whether flipping up the collar  or sticking a fresh flower into the button hole as pictured above, they put the "effortless style" back into the lapel that we Americans have so well adapted.

I recently blogged about a "Look for Less" in adapting the newly reinvented trend in my

[SHOCKING NEWS] Yves Saint Laurent changes name to Saint Laurent Paris

Hedi Slimane’s first big move as creative director of Yves Saint Laurent will be to change the brand’s name to Saint Laurent Paris.Founded in 1962 by late creator Yves Saint Laurent and his partner Pierre Bergé, it is reported that the label’s rebranding is part of new creative director Hedi Slimane‘s makeover of the fashion house. The new branding will be introduced in the coming months, most likely to coincide with Slimane’s first designs for the label’s Spring 2013 collection going on sale. However, it is expected that the YSL logo, which has long been one of the most iconic symbols of French luxury, will remain.Sources told WWD that Slimane hopes to bring Saint Laurent into a new era, and although this new move may raise eyebrows, it is in keeping with many other top houses that go by a singular surname such as Prada, Versace and Chanel. When Slimane was appointed Saint Laurent creative director a statement explained that he had been given “total creative responsibility for the brand image and all of its collections.”So far he has shied away from the press, with his women’s cruise and Spring 2013 menswear collections only going on show to buyers.Via LuxuoI don't know how I feel about this one guys.. I'm all for change but sometimes if it aint broke don't fix it. However, I'm sure the name change will not effect the infamous collection. What do you think?

The day finally came when LeBron got his ring and with great accomplishments comes great celebration. Miami Heat superstars Dwayne Wade, LeBron James & Chris Bosh better known as "The Big Three" along side their teammates, family and friends all celebrated at popular night sport Club LIV located at Fountain Bleu Hotel on Miami South Beach last night. The stars arrived shortly after 3am with a large entourage including Heat Owner Micky Airson. LeBron was seen drinking out of a 15-liter bottle of Ace of Spades champagne … (good thing he didn't throw it) which usually runs around $75k. During the night LeBron grabbed the mic and rapped along with the music all night in celebration as D. Wade & bunch of his teammates puffed away on cigars.

For this occasion the popular ballers were not seen in their usual suits, dimpled ties and wingtips. They all kept in cool, calm and collective as they celebrated throughout the night in comfortable street style.  For the socialites and attending fans rumor has it that the price at the door started off at $100 and jumped to $1,000 for entry as the celebration continued till after 6am.

LeBron wore a “vampire t-shirt” made of his face similar to the Givenchy tee made especially for Kanye and Jay-Z on the Watch The Throne tour.

He paired the look with trendy frames and splattered camouflage shorts.

D Wade rocked a Team No Sleep t-shirt.

Wade paired the tee with green chinos.

Showing a little PDA, Chris Bosh wore a Nike "Every Damn Night" t-shirt that retails for $28.00

All and all it looks like The Big Three as well as their teammates had a great time celebrating their well deserved victory. Congrats to the Heats on their 2012 NBA Championship. Check out more party pics below.

Blogger Spotlight: Color Blocking [Art + Fashion]

To contact us Click HERE
Yesterday, I decided to go to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in Manhattan to check out the SCHIAPARELLI & PRADA exhibit. For this [Stylish Sunday] I went with a summer favorite theme: Color blocking. There is a very fine line in allowing the mix of different colors to work against each other, but when done effectively you are able to produce a combination worthy of a photograph. For this ensemble, I wanted to work with the dark contrasts of navy and purple by adding a pop of green hue for additional definition. The hint of orange is showcased in the sole of the shoe and is also brought out in my belt option. I used the bright orange belt as a focal point barrier to break up my shirt and pant. The pink lapel flower is just another dimensional layer of color I added to make the upper of my wardrobe pop when wearing the jacket. It serves the same purpose as my orange belt when the jacket is off. That forth dimension of pop color is a crucial element when selecting your combination while color blocking. Granted, it's not necessarily needed but when used correctly it solidifies the fact that you know what your doing!

In a recent TREND REPORT  blog post relating to [Getting Dressed from the Sole], I talked about how this hot trend would be sure to surface in the summer months. Ideally the concept is self-explanatory. By literally allowing the sole of your shoe to depict your fashion forecast for the day, you are able to allow your shoes to speak for themselves. Check out that informative post here and the break down of my color blocking outfit below.

If you are in the New York area or will be visiting soon, the Met's Spring 2012 costume exhibition "Schiaparelli and Prada" will be showcased until August 19th. The educational exhibit explores the striking affinities between Elsa Schiaparelli and  Miuccia Prada, two Italian designers from different eras.
